Whenever you complaint that your computer is a bit slow,"empty the PREFETCH and %TEMP% folders" is one of the common advises you get,so we try to follow it,i've also heard it from many people and followed it for quite a time, but later came to know the real purpose of those two folders,so i thought i would share it with you,
PREFETCH is the folder in which windows keeps data about the common applications you use and the way you handle your computer, its like predefined instruction set on how to start your desktop,it is a self maintaining folder i.e., it takes care of itself, you need not bother about it,
And coming to the myth,if you empty this folder, each and every time, before the start up,windows should search for programs which are to be started along wiht your desktop, then again saves them in this folder, slowing up the start up process.so,if you empty the PREFETCH folder, you are slowing up your start up process.
TEMP is the foldre in which all the temporary data of your threads and os are stored.
even,it also is a self maintaining folder.all the data in the temp folder is cleared every time you shut down your computer.so,you can also forget dealing about it,or sometimes you can even empty it if you need instant optimization
